we’re going to demonstrate how to clean the laser lens on a DVD or CD player. Overtime, dust can collect on the lens and cause the player to not play at its optimum potential, or not play at all. It will tend to skip a lot, and when it reaches that point, it needs to be cleaned. You can purchase a cleaning disc in any electronic store. There are several brands out there, but they all work pretty much the same. This particular model, you’ll see that it has 2 little brushes on the backside of the DVD or CD.
Those brushes spin and actually clean the laser lens. What we want to do is, there is an arrow that points in the direction that you need to place the DVD in. You place it in there, close it, and allow it to read. After a few seconds, you’ll hit play and it will start to play the disc. It should stop automatically after about 15-20 seconds. If it doesn’t, then just go and stop it manually. If it doesn’t stop automatically, then just go and hit stop after 15 or 20 seconds. It should be clean now. We will just eject the disc. Those brushes went through and cleaned the laser lens on the DVD player. They recommend that you do this every 8 hours of play. I don’t do mine that often. Probably about once a week, I’ll clean my lens. But you should be aware that you should not use it on gaming systems that use a DVD or optical disc. It can damage gaming systems. This is for DVD players and CD players only.
We will start with the most important part, the motherboard. When buying a motherboard, the first thing we need to pay attention to is the type of processor it is made for. This is usually determined by the socket or sometimes slot type. It can be broken down into two categories either AMD or Intel type. Today, we’re working with an Intel Pentium 4 processor whose speed is 3.2 GHz, the socket 775, so we have a socket 775 motherboard. The next thing to consider in buying a motherboard is the type of RAM or memory. The latest motherboards are going to DDR-II memory. However, this motherboard supports DDR-I. For older motherboards you may need SD/RAM. Also, when choosing a motherboard you will need to determine what type of video card you are going to use. This motherboard has onboard video, but also has an AGP slot. The higher end newest video cards that are being produced are called PCI Express or PCI E for short. Since we have an AGP motherboard we have got an AGP video card to install toady. When buying a motherboard one of things you are going to need to consider is what kind of hard drive you are going to get. Most newer motherboards will support both serial ATA or SATA hard drives as well as IDE, which is what CD/ROMs also use. This motherboard supports serial ATA. So, we have a SATA hard drive.
see you how to take your regular internet connection with a cable modem or a DSL modem, and add in a router so that you can use more than one computer at home. The example I’m going to be doing also happens to be wireless. Functionally, the two devises are identical other than one having bunny ears being able to broadcast to other computers without a cable. So first thing we’ll do is we’ll just take our cable modem here and disconnect it. We don’t need any power it while we’re doing this. We’re also going to bring in our nice little wireless router here. We’re going to take this. What’s going to happen is that the cable modem is currently connected to the computer via a network cable. We’re going to unplug that and set it aside here for just a moment. We’ll get back the computer number one in just a minute. I want to take a look at the back of the router. On the back of the router, you’ll notice that there are four ports together and then one port off the side. Usually this will say LAN or internet connection, and these will just be numbered as one through four and a lot of times it will be labeled as LAN or local area network, which is what you’re home network is technically called. So what we’ll do is we’re going to have to have another piece of cable. We got that right here, our nice yellow cable. We’re going to connect the yellow cable into our cable modem where our computer was plugged in, take that and connect it to the LAN or internet port on our router. Make our antenna stand up a little better there. What’s going to happen to the cable that went to the computer is now we’re just going to plug that into any of the four ports that we have on the wireless router. Now we’ve got that pretty simple and setup. We can go ahead and reconnect power to all of devises, such as our cable modem. Go ahead. Once our cable modem has power down here and that’s all working, we’ll go ahead and connect power to our wireless router. It’s going to go through a very quick startup sequence and you’ll have a series of blinking lights; nice little light show there, and then you’ll see some traffic indicators. Intermittent blinkings that indicate yes, I’m transmitting or receiving data. Every particular model is different depending on what name brand you might happen to have, so check your owner’s manual to see that there aren’t any problems with the actual hardware, if there’s an error usually there’s an error light or a light will stay on the solid where it shouldn’t or vise versa. Now you have connected your computer to a hub and wireless router. You’re ready to connect more computers in a identical fashion. You can use any of the four ports back here that are still available or connect wirelessly which I’ll cover again in another video.
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. Let’s talk about the keyboard. You have the normal area, where you type here, and you have your function keys across the top, and then some specialized keys to the side and your arrow keys here. But in file navigation and program control, you have some other specialized keys that you will use often.
Specifically, you have the Control, the Alt, the Escape key, and the Windows key. Now, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re not sure what the command is or what it’s trying to do, you can push the Escape key and it will typically back you out from what you’re doing. With the Control key, you can use that in combination with other keys.
Like for instance, Control C to copy. So you actually hold down the Control key and then push the C key. Here we have the Windows key, and this is great for starting some built-in commands. Like for instance, Windows, hold it down and press the E key. It will start Windows Explorer, which we will be using a lot. On the other side of the keyboard, we have the Enter key. It’s synonymous with return. So either enter or return means this key right here.
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. Let’s talk about Windows Explorer. I will start the program by pressing down the Windows key on the keyboard. While pressing that, press in the E key, and it starts windows explorer with a navigational panel on the left and the contents on the right. There is another way to start it, and that’s pressing down with the left button on the Start, going up to my computer, right clicking, and going down to Explorer, and I’ll select that with the left button. Again, we have Windows Explorer. I want to click the plus sign on My Documents.
It expands to show me the other files directly below it. If I left click on My Documents, it shows me the contents of that folder. So here is the folders immediately below it and the files within that folder. I also like to select a few other options; for instance, the view. I prefer the detailed view. In this view, I have more information and I can sort by each column, by clicking on its header name. I click again, it sorts in the opposite direction. I also like to show file name extensions, which are not showing now, and I like to show in the address bar and in the title bar, the full path name. I can do all this under Tools, Folder Options, and click on the View tab.
Down here, I can see display, the full path, and the title bar. I’ll click that for yes. It already has displayed the full path in the address bar. Then here, hide extensions is check marked. I’m going to remove the check mark so it’ll no longer hide them, now click Okay. Now, I have the file name extensions here. If I click on the folder, I can see the full path in the address bar and in the title bar.
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. Let’s talk about Open Dialogue Boxes. They’re similar to Windows Explorer, in that they let you navigate to files. For instance, here is a tool tip in the word processor. I’ll click open, and this is the open dialogue box. In there, you see the same files that Windows Explorer was showing from My Documents. My Documents is the button that is depressed here, showing its contents. I can click My Computer, and it’s show me the C drive and other drives, or I can just click Desktop and see that. There is My Documents, which I could open.
I’m going to go right into My Documents from here. Here are the files now. The thing to know about an Open Dialogue Box is the filter. I have had it before where people say my file it’s gone, it’s been deleted. Well, the thing you want to check is down here, files of type. This is your filter, it’s saying show all files. But if I want to see just my word processing files, in this case, I’m using open office. Here is the open document text, which is OTT, that’s the template and then ODT is the actual document.
So I look for ODTs. I have that selected for files of type, and it shows me only those files. If I had a .doc document in here, it wouldn’t show up right now, and you may think it has been deleted or removed. But what I could do is go back up here to all files and it shows everything.
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. Let’s talk about the context sensitive menus. Right now, I’m in Windows Explorer. I’m going to right click one of the files and it brings up this menu. It’s context sensitive because it brings up the options that you’re most likely to use. There is many more, like for instance, if you’re in a word processor and highlight a word, you could cut, copy, and paste.
There are other things you could do but they put the most common ones in the context sensitive menu. The thing to know in a context sensitive menu, especially in windows explorer here, is that one of the words is in bold. In this case, it’s Open. Whatever word is bold is the default operation when you double click it with the left button. So if I was just to double click this one, it would go ahead and open it. If I right click it it gives me options.

What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. In this clip, I’ll show you how to copy a file. You need to be able to see the file first. I’m using Windows Explorer to do that. Now, I need to select the file I want to copy. I’m going to click on story ideas. Now that it’s highlighted, I could do a couple of things. I could go up to edit and then copy. You can see over here it says control C. That’s the keyboard short cut. I’ll select the file again, and I’ll do control C from the keyboard. Now that I have done a copy, I can paste it where I would like. The other way to do it is to right click on the file, come down to copy, and left click on that. Again, it’s ready to be pasted. Now, I’ll go into creativity and inside creativity, we can see the folder name is creativity, there is nothing there. I’m going to right click and say paste. I could have also used control V to paste, or go up to edit and paste here. That’s how to copy a file.
Moving Files in Microsoft Windows
Hi! I’m Ross. Thanks for visiting expertvillage.com. What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. In this clip, I’ll show you how to move a file. Locate the file you want to move. In here, I have Windows Explorer, Story ideas. I will left click and I now it’s selected. Moving the file, means remove it from this location and place it some place else. There is a number of ways I could do that. I could push control X on the keyboard. I could go up, since it’s highlighted, to edit and cut. Again, I’m going to remove it from this location. I could right click on the file and go down to cut. When it’s selected, you can see the icon dims here. I’ll go into creativity. I’ll right click and paste. The file is now here. Now, let’s go back. The file is no longer at this level. It did get moved into here. Another way that you could move a file is to simply right click and drag it. When you let up, there is a move option; click it, then it’ll move the file into that area. If I go back into creativity, there it is.
Deleting Files in Microsoft Windows
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. In this clip, I’ll show you how to delete a file. From Windows Explorer, I have my resume. I just don’t need that anymore, so I’m going to go ahead and right click on the file. One of the options is delete. I’ll left click and you’ll see that it wants to send it to the recycle bin. That’s a good idea, let it go to the recycle bin, because I could go ahead and recover it from there. Or if somehow I just knew and didn’t even want it to go to the recycle bin, I could right click and before I press delete hold down the shift key, while holding down the shift key press the left button. It’ll say are you sure you want to delete this. It won’t say do you want to move it to the recycle bin. It will be permanently gone if you click yes. No, I’m not going to do that. The other thing you could do is you could go and drag it with a left mouse button right to the recycle bin itself, let go, and that’s where it is.
Recovering Files in Microsoft Windows
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. In this clip, I’m going to show you how to get files back from the recycle bin. Gardening.txt I’m going to delete and sending it to the recycle bin, it’s now gone. Because I went to the recycle bin, it has not been deleted from my hard drive. I can go up to recycle bin, right click, go to open or explore, I like explore better so I’ll select that, and I can see files that are sitting in the recycle bin. There is gardening.txt; gives me the date that it was deleted, it’s location. If I right click, I have the option to restore. It now disappeared out of the recycle bin. I’ll close that window, go back into my documents, and I’ll see if gardening.txt is back.
Finding a Lost File in Microsoft Windows
Let’s find out. In this clip, I’ll talk about finding a lost file. Typically, you would use the search command. Before we get to that, let’s talk about something that occurred on the help desk for me. I had a customer call once and say my folder is completely gone, it has been deleted, it’s missing. Their perspective is it has been deleted. It was just there moments before. I quiz them a little bit and I have the sense that what happened is they simply dragged the folder to another area. Now if you can imagine, take this structure where there is multiple folders and expand it out about five or six times so there are folders all the way down the screen here. When you’re moving your mouse about, if you left click something and drag it, that’s a way to move the file, or folder in this case. If I let up right there, lo and behold, that folder is gone. Now, we know that I dropped it in here because we watched it, but if you’re moving by and accidentally clicked the mouse for a moment and let right back up, it’s going to drop it some place. How do you find it? Well, there is something you could do instead, and this is what we did. I had that individual, since there were probably 20 or 30 folders there, use the control Z, which is the same as the undo command. Undo move, I’m going to click this. Look at that, creativity is back here. Yes, the plus sign is still here, but that’s just a remnant, it hasn’t updated yet. I clicked on it and it disappeared so the folder is back. That’s one way to find the lost file or folder.
How to Find a Lost File in Microsoft Windows
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. In this clip, I’ll talk about finding a lost file. Typically, you would use the search command, right click, go to search, and you have parameters here. If you know the file name enter it. Moon JPEG, it’s fabulous picture you took last night and you can’t find it. You will look for everything that matches that description. You can also search for it another way. Let’s say that the file you knew was created only in the last couple of days or that it was on the system in the last of couple days. You have options down here about when was it modified. Click on that, within the last week, within the month, or you can put exact dates if you like. You could also do that with the size. A word or phrase in the file. For instance, let’s say you knew something had to do with taxes. You put taxes there and depending on what folders you’re searching in, I’m searching in my personal folders, and every folder below it with all its files. If I click search it will go ahead and look through all the text within those documents, and bring up the matches here. Then you can go from there
USB Flash Drives & Microsoft Windows
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. How do you copy a file to a device, lets say a floppy drive, an external USB memory card, external USB drive, or fire wire drive. What you can do… let’s say I want to print my wonderful wife.txt from a printer that’s on a different computer. I could right click this, go down to send to, and I have different options for devices that are connected. You could have a floppy drive that you say you would send it to or USB drive. I could send it to my CD writer. Here I have an external hard drive that I could send it to. When I click on it it will copy it to that location. Then you can move that device to the other computer and access it, and print your file. The other way to copy it to disc is to go up to the file that you want to copy, right click, copy, and then go to my computer. Expand that out and you’ll see the different devices connected at the local drive. I have my external drives here. You could have your floppy; you could also have an USB thumb drive. I could left click this drive, right click, and paste. The file shows up.
How to Burn a CD in Microsoft Windows
What can we do with computer files? Let’s find out. How do you burn your files to a CD. If your computer is equipped with a CD burner, windows XP can send the files to the burner. Simply just highlight the files that you want to send, right click on one of the highlighted files and you have an option send to, find your burner. This one here is a DVD, yours could be a CD, but it is an RW so it can write to the disc. I will left click to select. You can see down here, you files waiting to be written to the CD. Click the files now. I’m going to click on that. It opens up this new window, and these are the files ready to be written to the CD. I can just leave the files in this area and keep sending more files. I could find another file, let’s say in letters. I could send this one over to the writer also, come back here, and the file is now there. Once I’m ready to burn these files to CD, let us come over to the left side and say write these files to CD. It will ask for a name. The name that you give it here will show up when you put the CD into a drive. These go through the process and now it wants the disc, put the disc in, click, and burn your files.
